MAINE COON PRICING

Due to covid, Maine Coon prices have skyrocketed in 2022; expect to pay $2,000 to $10,000 for a CFA-registered Maine Coon kitten from health-tested parents. The typical cost is roughly $3,000. Please read the entire article to determine the price.

COVID has increased the cost of everything, including feeding, grooming, screening, and importing. Kittens will cost more depending on how closely they match the ideal specimen and how much effort the breeder has put into growing such a cat. Breeding and raising healthy Maine Coon kittens is costly.

SCAM WARNING

Scammers are increasingly targeting buyers searching for lesser prices, between $200 and $1200. Scammers are astute; they will create websites. They usually have an entire ring of sites. Scammers do pay for Google ads in order to appear top in search results. Scammers are even creating bogus contracts (which could be legitimate contracts taken from real breeders). The vast majority of frauds are easy to detect. They have horrible grammar, inappropriate grammar, strangely gorgeous or very generic websites, strange names, inconsistent graphics, and something is generally “off.” Please do not ignore the warning flags simply because you want them to be true.

IS THE BREEDER REPUTABLE?
  • The breeder microchips the kitten so that it can be returned if it is lost.
  • If a kitten becomes homeless, the breeder will take it back.
  • The breeder administers age-appropriate vaccinations.
  • Parasite protection is provided by the breeder.
  • Prior to placement, the breeder spays and neuters the kittens. Preventing pyometra and unintentional litters.
  • The breeder ensures that a kitten is kept until it is at least 12 weeks old. Both the CFA and TICA ethics dictate that a breeder should keep kittens for at least 12 weeks. This ensures that the kitten is both emotionally and physically prepared. Allowing a kitten to leave when it is young can jeopardize its mental well-being and immune system for the rest of its life.
CAN YOU VERIFY THE BREEDER?
  • Check to see if the breeder is a member of the CFA or TICA.

  • By supplying their cattery numbers, the breeder may verify registration.

  • TICA.org can be used to obtain a verification listing from the breeder. This listing is only available to registered TICA members who have signed a code of ethics.

  • Unfortunately, many prospective owners are unsure of what to look for in a breeder and fall prey to fraudulent websites advertising low-cost kittens from a “reputable breeder.” NEVER BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE BUYING A MAINE COON KITTEN FOR $500-$1000.

CAN YOU NAVIGATE THE BREEDER’S WEBSITE?
  • The breeder’s website is simple to use.

  • The breeder maintains a webpage dedicated to educating people about the breed.

  • The breeder has a webpage where you may learn more about their program.

  • Pictures of available kittens can be provided by the breeder.

ARE THE PARENTS HEALTH TESTED?

Minim DNA testing is for HCM, SMA and PKD mutations. However other disorders include:

  1. Blood Disorders

  2. Cardiac Disorders

  3. Endocrine Disorders

  4. Immunologic Disorders

  5. Metabolic Disorders

  6. Muscular Disorders

  7. Neurologic Disorders

  8. Neuromuscular Disorders

  9. Ocular Disorders

  10. Renal Disorders Including PKD

  11. Skeletal Disorders

ARE THE KITTENS REGISTERED?
  • The breeder registers each litter and provides registration paperwork/numbers to buyers.
  • Be wary of a breeder that claims they don’t want to “deal with paperwork” or that they “only produce pets.” They most likely do not have valid registration paperwork.
  • If the Seller purchased a Maine Coon without breeding rights and subsequently reproduced, they violated the legal contract they made. You don’t want to do business with a “breeder” that broke a contract they pledged to keep.
  • A litter of kittens costs a breeder $10 to register with TICA or CFA. Why would a breeder reduce a purebred non-registerable kitten by hundreds or even thousands of dollars? Retired cats and cats with particular needs may cost far less than the average price stated. You would still look for the aforementioned characteristics in a breeder.
